UPM Holdings gives RM50,000 to Malaysian Students Education Fund

By Azman Zakaria Photo by Marina Ismail KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) handed over RM50,000 to Malaysian Students Education Fund to assist Malaysian students in Egypt facing financial difficulties. The contribution from UPM Holdings Sdn Bhd was presented by UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris to Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh who launched the fund here, today. Also present was UPM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohammad Shatar Sabran. In a press conference after launching the fund, Datuk Seri Idris said more than RM3.6 million had been collected from various parties, including non-governmental organizations (NGOs), corporate companies, public universities and individuals.   The fund, initiated by Higher Education Ministry and Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (GPMS), was set up following recent media reports that 150 Malaysian students doing medicine, dentistry and pharmacy in eight universities in Egypt, may face expulsion as they had failed to settle their outstanding study fees, totaling RM4.5 million. Amongst them were Final Year students who were about to complete their studies. He said the money will be disbursed as soon as possible to enable the students to sit for their examination which will begin in November. – UPM.
