CanMERDEKA Career Carnival Helps to Provide Employment Opportunities for Cancer Survivors

SERDANG, August 21– The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), in collaboration with JobsMalaysia, Cancer Resource and Education Centre (CaRE, UPM), and Cancerfly Cancer Prevention Association will organise the CanMERDEKA Career Carnival Programme to help cancer survivors with employment opportunities.

The ‘CanMERDEKA’ Programme symbolically hopes to provide financial freedom to cancer survivors as well as their family members.

The programme will be held on 1 October 2019 at FPSK, UPM.

During the carnival, cancer patients will have the chance to meet representatives from various companies and apply for jobs. Cancer survivors are cordially invited to attend this career carnival to seek for job opportunities.

Research has found that an estimated 50% of cancer patients face financial difficulties in the first year of contracting cancer. Some of the leading causes of these financial difficulties are loss of income, dismissal from work and high cost of treatment.

Loss of work not only affects the patients but also their family members in terms of financial difficulties and also brings about negative impact on the nation’s productivity.

According to statistics published by the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is estimated that 106,262 people suffered from cancer in Malaysia in 2018. Cancer cases in Malaysia increased from 32,000 new cases in 2008 to 37,400 in 2012.

The number is expected to increase to 56,932 by 2025. Among the major types of cancer in Malaysia are lung cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, blood / hematologic cancer as well as prostate cancer.

Therefore, FPSK UPM in collaboration with JobsMalaysia, CaRE UPM, and Cancerfly Cancer Prevention Association has taken the initiative to help this group of people by organising the CanMERDEKA Career Carnival Programme.

For this purpose, JobsMalaysia will play a role in bringing forward employers who are keen to offer job opportunities to cancer survivors.

The organisers would also like to invite employers who are interested to participate in the career carnival to contact the  organising secretariat and committees via email at cancerflyjobs@gmail.com.
