YOSH UPM, MyFundAction aim to produce 5,000 face shields for frontliners

SERDANG –The Chapter Alumni YOSH UPM students, MyFundAction and National Heart Association of Malaysia (MyHeart) are aiming to produce 5,000 face shields for frontliners to combat COVID-19.

Chairman of the Chapter Alumni YOSH UPM, Muhammad Azri Abdul Jalil, said 1,000 face shields and other medical necessities were handed over to Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) Director, Datuk Dr. Heric Corray.

To capitalise on free time available during the Movement Control Order (MCO), a total of 40 Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) students from Serdang Campus took the initiative to produce face shields in collaboration with MyFundAction and MyHeart for the use of frontliners in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perak, Sabah and Pahang.

UPM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof Dr Mohd Roslan Sulaiman, said UPM brought students on campus to volunteer, and it was a good initiative to occupy their free time during the MCO period.

He said that it also indirectly increased their sense of responsibility to help the government to curb the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak.

UPM Student Council Representative (MPPUPM), Victoria Nacgee Anak Mathew, said the volunteers involved were placed at the UPM SUKSIS Control Room that met the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the process of completing the face shields.

“The students were divided into two sessions each day to complete the face shields within a set time,” she said.

A student from the Faculty of Food Science and Technology, UPM, Nur Asilah Ismail, said in the first phase last week, more than 1,000 units of face shields were completed and 1,000 more will be produced in the next three days.

MyHeart Secretary, Dr Aimi Syakirah, said as a Malaysian, we should always help one another in combating the COVID-19 outbreak.

"The efforts undertaken by UPM students and NGOs in producing 5,000 face shields are expected to help frontliners, especially doctors, nurses and healthcare workers at hospitals and health clinics,” she said.

Chapter Alumni YOSH UPM Representative, Nur Asyikin Ramli, said she was touched to see the support of UPM students in coming forward to volunteer and putting their time and effort to good use.

“The students were also excited despite being tired in working hard to complete the face shields, and they were happy to contribute to the country while making good use of their free time,” she said. - UPM
