FPP Clothing Technology Laboratory produces PPE for frontliners against COVID-19

SERDANG, April 22 - The Clothing Technology Laboratory in the Faculty of Educational Studies (FPP), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has produced approximately 50 to 100 units of personal protective equipment or PPE a day to meet the needs of the University Health Centre (PKU) staff to prevent Covid-19 infection while on duty.

Support from UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Setia Dato’ Dr. Aini Ideris, has enabled the project which started producing about 50 PPE per day to increase to 100 PPE per day.

 

Dean of the Faculty of Educational Studies, Prof. Samsilah Roslan, said more than 20 UPM students and staff took part in the sewing process in the laboratory.

“The laboratory is equipped with 32 industrial sewing machines, six edge sewing machines, two buttonhole sewing machines, one fabric cutting machine and various sewing equipment. 

“I was informed by the Head of the University Health Centre (PKU), Dr Fauziah Adnan, that they started buying PPE for the use of their staff during the Covid-19 outbreak, but the supply of PPE was difficult to obtain and the price was increasing.

"This prompts the PKU staff to start sewing PPE on their own since mid-March by bringing sewing machines from home," she said.

Meanwhile, a senior lecturer in the Department of Science and Technical Education, Dr. Rahimah Jamaluddin, said she practised PPE production using mass production system as used in the clothing manufacturing industry.

Through this method, she created five stations according to work specialisation, namely cutting station, rubber arm stitching station, arm-to-body attachment station, neckline edge stitching station and lastly packing and finishing station.

“The application of mass production system and fabric cutting using electric cutters can increase PPE production as students have mastered the skills for their work.

"This method minimises possible mistakes and can keep students safe throughout the process of producing PPE," she said.

A student of Bachelor of Business Administration, Wan Nur Syafiqah Wan Norhisham, 22, said she was involved in the Projek Sentuhan Prihatin FPP & PKU, a project to curb the Coronavirus outbreak as she wanted to learn something new outside her field of study.

"At first I was assigned to cut fabric but when I saw other friends sewing, I wanted to learn to sew PPE," she said.

Another student of Bachelor of Food Service Management, Izzah Shahira Anuar, 22, said the sewing method and demonstration by Dr. Rahimah allowed her to learn to sew in a short period of time.”

 

“Dr. Rahimah has arranged the students systematically according to their respective areas of work,” she said.

The initial goal of establishing the Clothing Technology Laboratory was for teaching and learning purposes for students of Bachelor of Home Science Education, a programme offered since 1979.

The laboratory is also used for other TVET programmes such as students who are taking minor subjects in Design and Technology.

In addition to teaching and learning, the laboratory is also used to provide skills training to students, home science teachers, vocational college teachers and the local community through organising sewing workshops and short-term courses. - UPM
